Are you looking for a great holiday destination where you can relax and forget about your daily stresses back home? Or perhaps you just want to go to a new place and discover what it’s all about. Whatever your reason may be, the Andaman and Nicobar islands is a wonderful destination for anyone looking forward to beautiful beaches, relaxation, and friendly people.
One of the seven union territories of India, the Andaman and Nicobar islands are situated in the Bay of Bengal, further south of Myanmar. Due to their remote location and distance from the mainland, the islands guarantee a unique cultural and scenic experience for people both from India and abroad. The Andaman and Nicobar islands showcase a wide variety of must-visit locations, ranging from pristine beaches, unexplored forests, and historical landmarks. The islands also house a friendly and diverse local population that hosts a mix of various cultures and traditions. It is recommended you spend at least a week or so on the islands to get the most out of your stay.
One of the most popular beaches in the Andamans, Radhanagar beach has received international recognition for its cleanliness and beautiful environment. Upon reaching the shores, you’ll find yourself walking into a scene that looks straight out of a travel magazine. Imagine standing in the cool sapphire-blue sea water and gazing into the sparkling white sand and the lovely palm trees in the backdrop.
The water at Radhanagar is crystal-clear, calm, and very safe to swim in. If you’re into nature walks and are an avid bird watcher, there is the option of visiting the Japanese Hill forests. So in any case, make sure you have a DSLR in hand as you’re bound to chance upon some breathtaking shots. Did we also mention there’s the option of getting an elephant tour along the coast?
Usually visited by boat, this beach is also accessible by foot via Radhanagar beach. If you plan on the latter, make sure to accompany yourself with a tour guide who will take you through a route that passes through wild mangrove forests. With its beautiful coral reefs and glorious sunsets, Elephant Beach is a great place to go snorkelling. You can also go sailing, which opens the opportunity of spotting marine life such as dolphins.
If you’re in the mood for self reflection or simply want to relax under the shade of Mahua trees, this is the place for you. Also known as beach #5, Vijayanagar Beach is accessible via car or one of the public buses available on the island. You can also head to the Full Moon Cafe situated close by, in case you’re in the mood for tasty food or coffee.
The epicenter of the island’s colonial past, the Cellular Jail offers one a close perspective of the lives of the Indian freedom fighters and the horrifying things they had to endure during the British rule. The jail offers a tour of the cells, art galleries, and execution chambers of the fort-turned-tourist attraction. Don’t forget to check out the dazzling light and sound show that’s hosted every evening at the monument.
If you’re in the mood for exploration and a bit of an adrenaline rush, this is the place for you. Once inaccessible due to the hostile attitudes of local tribesmen, the island still remains mostly unexplored. It is highly recommended to bring an experienced tour guide along with you who knows his way through the mangrove swamps. The tour usually takes about a day to complete and should provide you with an opportunity to visit untouched beaches, beautiful limestone caves, mud volcanoes, and much more.
This is another popular location on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands known for its azure waters, white sands, and lush green vegetation. The beach also hosts a plethora of coral reefs and fish which can be viewed using glass-bottomed boats available for rent. Bharatpur beach is also known as a great sunbathing location and has many rental stations for outdoor activities such as jet-skiing and scuba diving.
Also known as the “Sunrise Beach”, Sitapur Beach offers tourists a wonderful opportunity to view picturesque sunrises that paint the landscape a deep reddish-orange colour. The water is generally considered safe to swim in, despite occasional high tides. The beach is also known for its limestone formations and green vegetation.
There are a ton of staying options in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, depending on your budget and location preferences. If your budget is larger and you’d prefer staying at a five-star hotel, consider the luxurious Fortune Hotel in Port Blair. The hotel has a full-frontal view of the Bay of Bengal, provides free breakfast and is equipped with beautifully decorated rooms. It also has a billiards room and a movie theater.
If an offbeat boutique hotel is for you, try having a look at the Coral Reef Resort in Havelock Island. The resort hosts a unique decor, excellent service, and beautifully designed spacious rooms. Facilities such as a gymnasium, a swimming pool, and a restaurant are also available.
Like being close to nature? Consider staying at the Barefoot Resort, also situated in Havelock Island. At Barefoot, you will reside in a quaint little Nicobarese-themed cottage while also having the option of stepping out into nature and relaxing amongst the birds and trees.
For a cheaper stay, consider the Swagat Lodge. One of the oldest lodges on the islands, it is conveniently situated close to Port Blair Airport and is owned by a friendly old local. The Lodge offers a wonderful opportunity to gain knowledge about the local culture, sites, and people. Rooms are equipped with WiFi, TV, heaters, and are cleaned regularly. Though there aren’t any in-house dining facilities available, you can dine instead at a couple of restaurants located nearby.
Batarang Island has areas infested with salt water crocodiles and indigenous tribes that are weary of outsiders. Seek the help of an experienced local guide who knows the routes and appropriate safety measures.
Please take all necessary swimming precautions on beaches and swim in waters considered “safe to swim”. Make sure you do not venture too far into the sea, especially if you are accompanied with a child. It is also best advised against snorkelling and/or deep water diving if you are pregnant or have any pre-existing ailments such as a heart condition.
If you’re currently residing in India, there are several airports offering flights to Port Blair. The most popular airports include Vizag, New Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai. If you are currently residing outside India, please contact your local airline or one of the Indian airline companies such as Air India or Jet Airways to see if they offer good holiday packages. It is advisable to book your tickets in advance as prices start to soar towards the end of November.
